1978 Columbia Western Flyer question... help.
« on: July 18, 2010, 11:54:23 PM »

I just bought a 1978 Columbia Western Flyer that runs pretty good, but I am trying to make a few adjustments and service it.

Anyone know what kind of transmission fluid it takes?  It has a Sachs motor on it and when I took off the whole cover on the left of the motor, it looked pretty bad inside.  It was white and creamy with water in it.   I drained it all out and washed it out and let it dry.

Now I need to know the proper fluid that goes back in it.

Anyone have a service manual or owners manual who can tell me?

Thank you.

Ok, think I am in the right section now.

I have not put that Type F trans fluid in and the trans seems a little rough at slow idle when I am trying to give it a little gas and accelerating a little.

It was doing this before I changed the trans fluid.

Is something else wrong?

Thanks

So, is the transmission empty and you're running it, or is the nasties still in there?

No, I totally washed it out with gasoline and let it dry for several hrs to make sure any left evaporated.

I have put new type F fluid in and run it...  it runs just like before, great at med, and full speed.

it just kind of has a rough feeling to it when try to start speed up from say 3-5 miles/hr.

Does it feel like its engaging? Or does it feel like the crank has shimming issues?

There is no low end on those...true mopeds, YOU HAVE TO PEDDLE off the line! They get in their own way...but a nice ride once they get going...

Yes, it is engaging.   It runs great once past say 5mph, but when slow down to a crawl, and give it gas, i can feel it shake some through the pedals.
