Grande... decomp valve, scored cylinder, F!...
« on: July 10, 2010, 01:07:50 PM »

I finally got the last couple parts needed to put my Grande project together and start it up.

Was trying to attach my decompression valve cable and found that the little hook for it was missing.  I have a spare, but I couldn't seem to get the hook seated in-situ.  I took the head off for closer inspection and found that the there was a noticeable scratch down the cylinder wall.

I'm pretty pissed off, because I bought this engine as a "good running" motor a few months ago from a guy in Ohio (that I buy a lot of parts from).

I'm really disappointed and unsure what to do about this.  Maybe take it to some machinist to bore it out, then buy an over-sized piston?  pay some eBay nutbag way too much for a replacement?  Drop *another $100+ that I can't really afford for a full kit?

What do you guys normally do about this?

I still can't figure how to attach the decompression valve to this engine... the head is different from the heads on the ciao/bravo...

Have you tried to run it? It might run, even with the scoring. Stock cylinders are sometimes good like that.

here's how the hardware go together...

if you lose the clip that goes on the top stud, you can remake one out of something...
if you lost the springy arm...uhhh i dunno besides getting a new one.
I may have the stuff you need if it comes down to it.

I would definitely try and run that cylinder before doing anything drastic.

Thanks for that drawing that's exactly how my two bravos go together.
The Grande is.. different.  I've figure out that the decomp end hooks into a notch in the head itself.  My decomp valve is just a *little* too short to work there.  I had to order a replacement from Zippy.

Because of the way the head is cast, I can't install that little crow-foot washer - even though I do have a spare.

I'll post back when I get it together... This bike is *so* close to being ready to ride - it hurts.
