best synthetic oil?
« on: March 05, 2010, 01:41:07 PM »

well i think im finally ready to move up from shitty dingy loud noname kits and was wondering what everyone runs on their expensive cylinders. ill prob end up running saber but i think im buying a polini and ive heard talk of running those 60:1 - 80:1 so i just want to make sure what im running is goooood. ALSO i hear not to break in a kit with synthetic, whats a good non-synthetic oil to break in with? i had hoped my moped experience would always be care free but it seems now i need to start caring about my cylinders, linda would be proud.

Motul 800 double ester. End of discussion.

Also, I've always broken in with synthetic, no problems.

I agree on the Motul.
The break in on synthetic is not bad, just if you switch back to reg after breakin.
I dont know if its true, and I dont care, I use whatever whenever, no problems yet.

Honestly, I think most of the high-end full synthetics, like Motul 710/800 single ester, Amsoil Dominator/Interceptor/Saber, Honda HP2, Mobil 1, Klotz, etc, run about the same. If you can get one of those for real cheap, I wouldn't feel bad at all. Otherwise just spend the money on the 800DE.

It's all so expensive compared to $8/quart Lucas Full Syn.

I've broken in on Syn and Reg, Syn takes longer, but I had no issues.

When using synthetic make sure you have no air leak's. Somehow I think you may be more prone to seizure when running synthetic since generally they are designed to be run at a lower ratio.

It is because the oil burns hotter.

"original gaskets ... synthetic leaks, but normal oil doesnt"

Uhh. You've probably got problems, then. There's no real difference in the viscosity of the oil when it's suspended in vapor, so if you've got leaks, then you should replace your gaskets. Where do you see leaks?

Leaks around the exhaust port make sense, since non-synthetic tends to burn almost completely with the fuel mix, and synthetic tends not to burn at all, thus leaving a residue. I always get a spoogy goo around my exhaust port (and out the back of my pipe). Nothing to worry about. If your reed valve is leaking, then you might consider resealing it. That's a bad place to have leaks. I like to run synthetic on everything, keeps the wear down, keeps my pistons clean, and helps rings last longer.
