more ciao upgradez
« on: January 29, 2010, 11:57:18 AM »

so last night I put dropped the uber trusty engine off the ciao for a nice fresh ciao engine.
it's got some elegant port work done on it already, so I put on my hicomp head, upjetted to 75 for now, and wired it up. I exhausted myself last night trying get it to turn over but i'm sure it's just a belt thing.

Overall i'm stoked. Sounds wishy washy (can ya believe it?), but i may hold off on that kit a bit longer and go for a 50on50. I was topping out the other day at 39 in the flats with a %100 stock ciao engine with teensey tiny transfers. I think with some aggressive porting, the piston mod, a milled cylinder, bigblockfiero tech, and some race gears it might be possible. any opinions?

also red ciao is comin along nice too!

oh shit, this 50on50 vespa thing is actually taking shape...

got a fresh engine case coming to port the hell out of, do the same on a cylinder. speaking of which, my shortened piston and cylinder should be done by our hero Loshe this week. got a spare crank to cut up too. And i ordered enough bearings and seals from Motion Industries to last for a few rebuilds.

also I'm gonna strip all the extra weight off. which means goin back to the short seat (argh), but I somehow miraculously got a nice seriously cheap set of variated spokies comin! Those mags and the seat look alright, but they basically double the weight of the bike. Not sure about the fate of the motron forks yet. I might weigh them up against some ebrs or something, but I know i'm gonna need some kind of nice support up front if this is really gonna happen!

I don't know man, the weight of a long seat is worth it if you can go full tuck! chop the frame before you ditch a nice seat, haha.

I got my variated spokies in today. they're basically great. they have the pretty decent looking original rubber which has hilarious tread patterns...if you think tread patterns are funny! The rear wheel has 2 busted spokes. whoop. They're definitely heavier than i thought they would be.

I also got my $20 kinetic engine, and it's the rustiest piece of shit i have ever seen. The woodruff key and crank lobe won't budge at all, and are clearly part of the crank now. I basically bought it for the electrics and the flywheel, which of course are fucked too. but i got a case, cylinder, and piston out of the deal i guess. Luckily I still have one more kinetic engine coming to me that hopefully will have a flywheel and cdi that are in good shape.

I'm so stoked on my other vespa stuff though.

for 50/50 orange ciao...2 spare cranks to cut. 2 cases now to toy with once I get my modded cylinder and piston from the machinist.  machine man's also working on my case for the DR kit. not sure what i'm gonna do with that thing yet. I kind of need to find a new frame for it. hmmmmm.........

with slinker's help, red ciao now runs like the wind. starts on a quarter kick. stock pipe until I get a baffle made up for the euro one. I'm gonna ride it for a bit longer for fine tuning before I officially turn it over to it's new owner.

goon dight now!

I have a bunch of old thick spokes from wheels taken apart here, I bet I have some that would be the right replacments.  Also got those new ones coming in a few days.

sweet. finally ordered some race gears. I think the stock ratio is 12:1 and I'll be goin down to 9.5:1...

So this means that at I should be able to get the same speed I'm hitting now from lower revs? So if I keep it tuned for the revs i'm currently pullin, I should see a few more MPH at the top right?

Race gears installed! Took it around the block and it's already wayyy sweet. I didn't have enough room in the short run to really open it up. I'm gonna open it up down college on my way to work later.

Just turning the gears by hand I can feel the difference. There less resistance. And there's way less drag when I let off the throttle. It actually coasts now. And I'm glad i did it all because my gear oil was already fucking NASTY. And i just changed it over the winter.

I definitely lost some low end. But the front wheel does this weird thing where it stays on the ground now. But she feels quicker on top and smoother throughout the whole rev range. I'm gonna take a few grams out of my variator tonight and see what happens.

alright let's change the subject back to mopeds.
I'm pretty determined to go race orange ciao in Ohio in June. fuck yeah!

since i need to sort it out for my self and since i cant' wrench but can type, here's the shit i gotta do once i heal up and can actually do it.....

I haven't really gotten to toy with my variator since I got the race gears on, but I have very high hopes for what will happen to her when i lighten those weights. I've only ridden it once or twice with them but I can tell the stock internal gearing was holding it back at the top. So now I should be able to lighten my weights a bit and actually put those yet to be discovered revs to serious work. unless the pipe doesn't hit as hard up there, but i'm pretty sure i've got some room to play with. Plug chops afterwards. Gotta be careful goin fast on an 13SHA.

Second thing is the CDI install. Should be a piece of cake, as long as the CDI isn't limited or curved weird or any of that CDI stuff that i don't understand yet but will soon. The extra bonus of the CDI installation is that you have to use the kinetic flywheel which is super light! but probably super sketchy too ;(

Third thing is something I really need to get done but need some practice to do or someone else to do it. I REALLY need to get a cut crank in there. And I really want to try this cylinder and piston trick but i need a machinist to it to have a chance of getting it right. Loshe failed. I wanna go try those guy in Moberly.

Fourth is the least fun, and the one i've been putting off the longest but maybe the most important. My brakes, levers, cables and front suspension all need an overhaul if I'm gonna race. I just got fresh magura grips and levers from holmes that need to be installed. New cables ideally would go along with it. I think the motron forks work as well as any other stock moped fork, but they work and aren't the problem. The install is the problem. I just need to take it all apart and pop the cups out (fuckin hate that shit) and work on the tube a bit. Then maybe I should install those bravo forks i got from Kevin anyway... Now were talkin! Front axle is still perfect, but I need front and rear pads like a MOTHA! and rear brake pad replacement sucks and I've never done it.

I won't get all this shit done by June's races, but I feel like I could competitive now with just lightening my weights.

word. let's get stoked and build bikes and fucking ride rad y'alls!

on the subject of racin a piaggio,,, I've been thinkin that a manually operated clutch would benefit... something like a bativus arm, and a throwout bearing,, so that all the varying, is controlled at a hand grip,, the tighter one pulls the lever, the tighter the front pulley becomes
one could rev and squeeze,, and have a few spare bearings , arranged to snap in easily, since it would run all the time,,,

I've been thinking about this for most of the day and am not sure if i get it yet. I understand why manually controlling the variator is dope. Its like a launch lever but controlled with a little  throttle like thing, not your foot. but the rest is greek. Can't find any info about this setup on tommy's bike. can someone here enhance my moped lifestyle?

it sounds to me like a little "fork" that would push/pull a bearing against the pulley and push/pull it to the wider setting of the variated pulley. instead of the weights doing it, its a cable pulled "pushrod" of sorts.

I think I got what mark was saying.

Replace the variater ramp plate and the weights with a bearing and lever setup something similar to the operation of a batavus starter clutch.

Then instead of the weights and centrifugal force from the engine making the front variater pinch you would have to pull the lever and force the variater in on the shaft thus making the variater pinch manually.

You could do the opposite too.

Leave the weights in, or even heavier weights.  Then use a cable to pull the variator apart for when you want low end.

Which ever way would have you not messing with an extra control most of the time.
